Kylan Rice is a poet, scholar of nineteenth-century American literature, and literary editor. He is the author of the poetry collections An Image Not a Book (Free Verse Editions, 2023) and Name & Earth (Bench Editions, 2026), as well as Incryptions (Spuyten Duyvil, 2021), and his third poetry collection, Cloud on Page Opposite, is forthcoming from Free Verse Editions in 2027. With Dan Beachy-Quick, he co-authored Primer (Free Poetry, 2023), a collection of conversations about poetics. He is also co-editor of Southern Lights: Seventy-Five Years of the Carolina Quarterly (UNC Press, 2023).

His poems and creative prose have appeared in Colorado Review, Denver Quarterly, Image, Kenyon Review Online, Oxford Poetry, Tupelo Quarterly, Quarterly West, Seneca Review, and West Branch, among other journals. His scholarly work has appeared in ELH, Arizona Quarterly, CR: The New Centennial Review, Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies, and Women’s Studies.
Kylan is Assistant Professor of English at Utah State University, where he teaches courses in nineteenth-century American literature, twentieth- and twenty-first-century poetry, and creative writing. His current book project, The Costs of Cherishing: Unsentimental Materialism in Nineteenth-Century American Women's Poetry, examines the gender politics of keepsake cultures in the nineteenth-century United States, focusing on how women writers from the period worked to renegotiate and revise obligatory intimacies in poetry about mementos, heirlooms, and sentimental jewelry. More broadly, his recovery-oriented research concerns minor and minoritarian aesthetics, with a special interest in ornamental aesthetics in poetry by writers from underrepresented backgrounds.
He edits Thirdhand Books, a press specializing in full-length collections of contemporary experimental lyric poetry, and holds a PhD in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
